This year in celebration of International Women’s Day, we getting up, close and personal with the amazingly talented Victoria James, designer and creator of Victoria James Designs.
The Very Beginning
Victoria James Designs all began in 2006 following a commission of a unique design created from a client brief, usually during chats over coffee whilst finalising fabrics to sofas and chairs is where the urge to create custom and bespoke design began.
Victoria: “I like to expand on the client’s initial thoughts, bringing their ideas to reality and seeing the excitement flow in creating a custom piece. Knowing the client has had some input is the most rewarding part of being a designer, with interior design or producing that one special design.”
Where did the idea of Victoria James Designs come from?
By utilising the cabinet and upholstery workrooms within The Odd Chair Company’s manufacturing base, enabled further expansion on an already personal service we are passionate about.
Your inspiration for the Acrylic range and Bespoke Collection
The acrylic designs formed the basis of the Victoria James collection. Acrylic is a beautiful and transparent material of various densities, which allowed me to create classical and timeless pieces to sit perfectly inside any given home interior, modern or contemporary. The other designs in the Victoria James collection are upholstery pieces, occasional seating and cabinet goods, all bespoke and handmade to order.
Your daily working life alongside being a working mum
Meeting clients, consulting on high end residential schemes, from selecting the finest fabric and furniture collections in the business – not just from The Odd Chair Company. Although the capabilities in having our own manufacturing facility next door to our offices is endless.
The things you like about Pimlico Road
The organic buzz of Belgravia, Pimlico Road is the premier destination in London for fine furniture, lighting, Arts and Antiques and of course the warm welcome at No. 45!
The connection with The Odd Chair Company
I was brought up with Antiques and handmade furniture from the age of 5 where my parents were established architectural antique dealers. I spent most weekends loading containers destined for the USA from the church contents my father had purchased to fit out bars and restaurants in Dallas, Texas and also here in the UK. I have vivid memories eating from a refectory table, sat at a church pew with an aged brass eagle lecture towering over me! My mother had a passion for upholstery and interiors and The Odd Chair Company started in the early 90’s.
What Victoria’s friends say
Loyal to the point of insanity, kinder than Mother Teresa, loves beer like a bloke, has a laugh that brings a smile to everyone in the room and as tough as old boots!
