The Gainsborough Edit

Shining the spotlight on the Gainsborough Armchair Chair— a period design based on the original mid-18th Century Gainsborough style chair. This design has become one of our post popular period style chair designs this year. Our Gainsborough Armchair has a generous seat and back proportions to ensure total comfort. The outer back includes a piping detail and the base and underside of the arms are hand studded in a choice of finishes. Both of these hand finishes are optional should customers wish to exlcude both the piping and stud finish on this chair.

The Gainsborough chair is an English design, often called a "French chair", and was named after painter Thomas Gainsborough, who frequently used them for sitters in his portraits. These chairs are usually characterised by their wide seats, high backs, open sides, and short, upholstered arms.
